In this third and final installment of our “Underpainting Series” featuring FAA graduate and Principal Instructor, Vitaliy Shtanko, you will see the final stages of the underpainting process for a portrait from life.

In Pt. 3 of this series, Vitaliy focuses mainly on the torso of the seated figure by blocking in the dress along with the silhouette and background. The blocking-in of the dress is an integral stage of the underpainting process, as Vitaliy demonstrates by regulating contrast and edge quality. With the use of a small amount of color, Vitaliy is able to keep the focus of the painting on the face of the figure.
